The impostor
Not by cunning. By taxonomy.
In 1801, John Latham described a small black-and-white bird from Sydney. He did not call it a robin. He filed it as a flycatcher, Muscicapa cucullata. Vigors and Horsfield renamed it Grallina bicolor. It then spent years in Petroica, next to the robins that actually look like robins, before being moved out again. Two centuries. Four names. Females are a plain grey-brown. In south-eastern Australia, this is the only robin whose male is black and white. The hood is standard issue. Nothing to put on.
